Little Things

“I meant to do that, does that mean a thing? If you wanted songs, then I meant to sing. I’d give you the world, if you’d give mine back. What I didn’t do…I meant to do that.”

Sound like just a country song, or your life? Well, it could possibly be both. In our everchanging, continuously busy world, we often forget to do the little things that make relationships just that much better. A lot of couples look at the BIG holidays, the BIG anniversaries, and give presents that suit the occasion. But what good are big presents if there’s nothing to back them up?

Let’s look at this past Valentine’s Day. Did you receive candy and roses, a fancy dinner and a horse and carriage ride around the town? If you did, you’re very lucky. I hope you appreciated your gifts. My own boyfriend (Hi baby, if you’re reading.) gave me a beautiful heart shaped locket and a big teddy bear. Believed me, I LOVED them. But you know what else I loved about the day? I loved just being with him that night, sitting in my pajamas, eating pizza and watching him put up a TV antenna. You see…it’s not the BIG things in your relationship that makes it worth it. It’s the little things.

“Buy me a rose, call me from work, open the door for me, what would it hurt? Show me you love me by the look in your eyes. These are the little things I need the most in my life.”

There are so many small things you can do to show someone you care. Give them a small kiss before you go to work, or even as you’re just passing by them. Watch 15 minutes of their favorite show when they’re unable to so they don’t miss anything. Encourage them in anything they want to do. Brush the hair off their face when they’re going to sleep. Hold their hand when you walk…. Any small gesture of love and compassion will make your relationship ten times better.

Don’t ever think that there’s not enough time to show how much you care. Always remember, big things are nice, but it’s the small stuff in love that counts.

(In case you’re wondering: Song #1 “I Meant To Do That” by Paul Brandt. Song #2 “Buy Me A Rose” by Kenny Rogers.)
