Welcome to the July issue
of Odyssey of Oddities
This month the topic is
C H U P A C A B R A S
So, you hear a commotion
outside on your deck or patio. You live in the island nation of Puerto
Rico. The noise startles you from your sleep. The dogs are barking and going
wild. Something is amiss. It's time to spring out of bed and
investigate. Your wife is awake by now as well, as you pull your
trousers up and put on your shoes. The noise is really wild now as the
chickens on your patio have joined in with the dogs. You open the door
and to your amazement or total shock, there is a creature pulling
chickens out of your chicken cage. Several dead chickens are on the
patio already. The creature looks at you with glowing red eyes. It's
slight body is akin to that of a monster. You grab anything you can
find and start clubbing the intruder. It fights back at you and you
struggle with it for a time. The creature is further startled by your
wife as she appears and screams. Suddenly it jumps high into the air
and escapes into the night, as you give chase. The creature is too
fast, and so you give up, and go back to examine the dead chickens
lying all around your patio.
This is exactly what
happened in one of the earliest Chupacabras attacks. It is not fiction,
or someone's fanciful tale. Other animals in the area were drained of
blood by two puncture wounds to the neck, just as this man's chickens
were. Goats were found with the same cause of death, hence the name
Chupacabras, which means "Goat sucker" was given to the
mysterious leathery creature. Even the Mayor of the city got involved
and is a true believer in the Chupacabras. He saw the evidence and was
good friends with one of the victims. Having known one of the people
all his life, he knew that he was not prone to telling fictional fairy
tales. The search was on. Many animals in the area, including cats,
goats, chickens were all victimized and killed by this elusive
creature. The first real attacks had begun and they seemed to
originate in Puerto Rico.
It seems as though the
initial sightings were confined to Puerto Rico, but that didn't last
too long. Texas, and Florida had similar incidents happen. Then Mexico
and recently, even South America. Arizona and California later were
also struck by the "Chupa" also. It seems as though the
Chupa likes to work in the southern regions of the U.S., South
America, and Central America. There were reports in two other U.S.
cities that were never explained where cats were meeting a similar
fate. St. Louis Mo. and Chicago Illinois were both victimized by
something that killed house cats. After following up on these
incidents, nothing was mentioned to really blame it on the Chupa
though. .The current activity seems to be located in Chile in South
America. One investigator has concluded that as many as 50 of the
creatures may be in the country. There have been over 135 animal
deaths recently. When he tried to put a number on other deaths that
were perhaps not reported to anyone, his estimate would be around 5000
animal deaths attributed to the Chupacabras. The same investigator attributes
ufo activity with the chupa. There have been many attacks
after ufo sightings in many areas of his country. So, we have a new
investigator in a "hot spot" who is currently documenting
the latest cases for study.
Glowing red eyes always
disturbs me greatly. I would need my heart restarted if I ever saw
glowing red eyes. This is what makes the Chupa especially scary in my
opinion. Along with glowing red eyes, the creature stands around four
feet in height, with hair that goes down it's back. Most accounts show
that it has wire like hair on it's head sometimes too and on the rest
of it's body, but not totally covered in hair. Leathery skin seems to
be shown in most accounts as well. Fangs protrude from it's mouth, not
unlike a vampire. The head seems large, but not too large in relation
to the rest of it's body. The legs are spindly but it has enough
muscle tone to it's thighs to make it seem compatible with it's
ability to jump and run well. Some accounts give the Chupa
"wings" and the ability to fly.
There are many artist
renderings to look at on the web, but most people have heard of the
Chupa and have seen these renderings. One interesting note is that A
village in South America described it perfectly during a recent
attack. The notable thing here was that they had no previous knowledge
of the creature. They were very isolated and didn't have access to any
previous stories to relate to. So when they drew the pictures of what
the intruder looked like, it was quite interesting that they drew the
exact description that most of the other accounts elsewhere had come
up with!
Does this creature really
exist? In my opinion, I tend to think that it must. There have been
too many accounts as of now with too many credible eyewitnesses that
all describe the same thing over and over again. The dead goats, and
chickens were killed by something, and in so many cases, the people
whose animals were killed all described the killer in great detail and
it always is the same, or very very close in it's makeup. If this was
a court case, it would have enough evidence to prosecute someone that
looked like that! I am going to say that this creature is in fact out
there.
As to where it comes from,
or how long it has been around, that is anyone's guess. Legends of
Gargoyles have been in existence almost as long as man has been on the
planet. Are these creatures Gargoyles? Various cultures have all had
the Gargoyle in their history. Could it be more than just a concept
for a statue on a building? Chupacabras may have been in existence for
a long long time. Who is to say? Another theory is that the secret lab
on Puerto Rico created the creature in a genetics experiment. That is
also a possibility too. No one knows much about the Chupacabras, or
where it comes from. That is something that we may never know. Even
though it may be a ufo related creature, it is hard to say where the
Chupa's reside.
Recently one account in
South America told of how one was captured by a government team. The
creature was whisked away never to be seen again. So if they are real,
there is a possibility that someone has one in captivity somewhere. I
hope they keep it securely fastened in it's cage.
I would like to say
I am a skeptic on this one however, with the evidence and quality of
the witnesses that are all around in many countries, I have to say
they saw something out of the ordinary. Without being able to offer
any other conclusion, I have to go along with what they all seem to
describe with the same similarity. Until there is evidence to the
contrary, I will go along with the Chupacabras. After all it's an odd
place out there sometimes.. Gtars said it..
