Empire home for frameless surfers

When I was offered a monthly feature on empire about music I got madly excited. Music is something that I can’t live without and I can talk about it for hours. I keep singing all the time unless I have a company because then I get shy. But then I started thinking what exactly should I write about? I need to calm down those of you who think that as a Disco Inferno chatter I’m going to convince you that polyester suits and Tony Manero’s moves are super cool (though they are). I am not, well maybe a little bit cause after all Saturday Night Fever rocks but about music movies we will talk/fight some other time. I am not a music expert, I guess I even don’t know some of the songs you think about as “classics” but I will pretend I do. I guess here I am going to babble about my music discoveries; things that I think are worth listening to or at least worth giving a try cause you never know what you may suddenly like. I don’t have any favorite song or kind of music though, things that I am listening too depend on my moods, but I guess alternative and rock music are what I really really like. I also like Polish music and some other European stuff that I bet most of you have never heard of and it will be fun to introduce some of it to you.
Except from my music guru I take all the novelties from my four favorite radio stations, which you can listen to through the Internet. First of them is Y100 from Philadelphia (www.y100.com) which by the way has the best morning show ever, then Atlanta’s 99x (www.99x.com) and 97xWoxy (www.woxy.com) from Ohio. Philadelphia’s and Atlanta’s stations are pretty much the same but Woxy is truly independent and alternative. Ant the best of them is Canadian 2kool4radio (http://www.2kool4radio.com/) which has absolutely awesome new stuff and a player that says what song is played right now. All of them have play lists on their websites, which are updated once a week or so so you can always check for new things there. Now when you have the song that gets stuck to you and you slowly realize you can’t live without it you need to get it.
I’m pretty sure each of you has some favorite site to get mp3 from, I like galaxy best (www.audiogalaxy.com) even though recently it got a law suit just like napster before it died and now more and more songs are getting blocked, but still galaxy rocks and rolls when you are looking for less popular things and now they added a new feature which lets you snoop through other people’s files and they can send to you the songs that have officially been blocked. Sneaky way to break the law with innocent smile. Another of my favorites is WinMX (www.winmx.com) which works exactly the same way as napster used to, they even look similar and WinMX has everything though it gets pretty slow when there are lots of people using it. Another really good thing is Kazaa (www.kazaa.com), which has not only mp3 but videos, images, documents and software as well. Morpheus is Kazaa’a twin, actually I can’t see any difference between them except for the name, as they even look the same, and only the logo is changed. Bearshare (www.bearshare.com) is another one but it’s pretty moody so actually you never know whether it’s going to work or no. The worst of them all, which I hate, is Aimster (www.aimster.com) because it ate all my mp3 while I was trying to get rid of it. So now I need to get everything all over again, which sucks. Big time.
Anyway, Christmas is coming and it means presents, buying and getting (not sure which one of them is more fun) and this year we have lots of to choose from. My personal favorites that I just know will be awesome are greatest hits compilations from Barenaked Ladies, The Cure (yes it is awesome! Try to get the special edition with extra cd with acoustic versions) and Smashing Pumpkins, live albums from Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails, and regular albums from Tori Amos, Incubus, Lenny Kravitz, Michael Jackson and my favorite of all Britney S. And I’m pretty sure I’m going to get them all (umm maybe except for BS which stands for lalala) for myself for Xmas (unless any of you want to get them for me then feel free). I am not going to recommend anything for New Year’s party as everyone knows what tickles them best but here’s a few songs you can get. They are not new but I love them this week. Here they go:
This Mortal Coil – You And Your Sister
Skunk Anansie – Hedonism (acoustic)
Mojave3 – She Broke You Softly
JJ72 – Snow (acoustic)
Joseph Arthur – In The Sun
The Roots & Eryka Badu – You Got Me
Stone Temple Pilots – Interstate Love Song (acoustic)
Seven Mary Three – Lucky (acoustic)
Butthole Surfers – Shame of Life
Finger Eleven – Bones And Joints
Quickie – Medicated (Just To Get By)
Hawksley Workman – Striptease
Whale – Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe
Incubus – I Wish You Were Here
And something Polish – Myslovitz – Dlugosc Dzwieku Samotnosci,
Hope you’ll find something you really like and let me know if there’s anything you’d like to read about in here. Till then take care of yourself, and each other as would Jerry Springer say, or simply rock and roll.
